چکیده

We present analytical results characterizing the e ects of multipath interference on an FM subcarrier data channel. A closed form expression for the FM discriminator output (or the instantaneous received frequency) is obtained when there are M re ected path signals in addition to the primary path signal. We derive the power spectral density when the multipath interference is weak, and determine the conditions under which multipath interference causes nonlinearities in the instantaneous frequency of the received signal. In order to verify our analytical results, we have built an SPW simulator of HSDS (the high speed data service) system, and we have observed close agreement between our analysis and simulations. The analytical techniques presented here could potentially be applied to other FM subcarrier systems, as well as to digital wireless systems that adopt FSK or its variants. Hence, our results could be useful in understanding noncoherent reception of the GSM digital cellular system, for example.

There is a renewed interest in utilizing the upper portion of the baseband spectrum of an FM broadcast channel for digital data service. This part of the baseband spectrum was previously unused by the audio signal. In the presence of multipath interference, the instantaneous frequency of the received FM signal is a nonlinear combination of the instantaneous frequency of the transmitted signal a...

Principles and Limitations of Ultra-Wideband FM Communications Systems

This paper presents a novel UWB communications system using double FM: a low-modulation index digital FSK followed by a high-modulation index analog FM to create a constant-envelope UWB signal. FDMA techniques at the subcarrier level are exploited to accommodate multiple users. The system is intended for low (1–10 kbps) and medium (100–1000 kbps) bit rate, and short-range WPAN systems. A wideba...

Precise Analysis and Evaluation of OFDM Systems over a Mobile Frequency-Selective Nakagami-m Fading Channels

In this article, the symbol error probability (SEP) of OFDM systems using M-ary coherent demodulation communicating over time-varying sum of Nakagami-m fading channels is analyzed. The focus of this article is on the evaluation of OFDM signals in mobile radio applications, such as IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.16a, and digital video broadcasting (DVB) systems. The time variations of the channel during...

Performance Evaluation of a Frequency Modulated Spread-spectrum System

Analog frequency modulated (FM) systems offer advantages of reliable speech quality and simplicity, whereas code division multiple access (CDMA) systems promise high capacity, resistance to multipath fading, and simplified frequency planning. In this thesis, we investigate the performance of a wireless local loop (WLL) system that uses the frequency modulation with the CDMA technique. The perfo...
